UC Links Expedition After-School Program at Roosevelt Middle School, Oakland
Located at Roosevelt Middle School in the San Antonio neighborhood of Oakland, California, this site engages youth in “digital storytelling” and archaeological activities such as computer exploration of ancient cultures and project-based, hands-on investigative activities. The site is directed by Tamara Sturak who has worked since the program started in 1999 in collaboration with Professors Ruth Tringham and Meg Conkey. Every semester since 1999 they teach a group of students in a service-learning course about archaeology and skills and theories of education; the students get practice in the application of these skills and anthropological observation by mentoring the 6th-8th graders in the after-school Expedition program. Many of these students go on to be teachers themselves through Teach for America and opther programs.
Since 2002 Expedition has been fully funded by the UC Links (University-Community Links) program and is part of their international network of innovative after-school programs.
